A former Los Angeles police officer was suspected early Thursday morning of shooting another Southern California officer to death overnight and wounding two others even as authorities hunted for him in connection with an earlier double-homicide, CBS News correspondent Bill Whitaker reports.
There were two separate overnight shootings about 60 miles east of Los Angeles in Riverside County that investigators believe involved former LAPD officer Christopher Dorner, who’s also the main suspect in the weekend killing of a couple whose bodies were found in Irvine. He was fired in 2008 for making false statements.
CBS News senior correspondent John Miller, a former head of the LAPD’s Major Crimes Division, said on “CBS This Morning” Thursday that authorities were carrying out a manhunt “like none other” to find Dorner.
“He’s really thrown down an incredible gauntlet here, and they have deployed every resource the LAPD has,” Miller said.
The first overnight shooting occurred in the city of Corona and involved two LAPD officers working a security detail, said Sgt. Alex Baez of the LAPD’s Newton division. One officer was grazed.
Later, two officers on routine patrol in the neighboring city of Riverside were ambushed in their patrol car at a stop light, said Riverside Lt. Guy Toussaint.
Officer Bryan Galbreath told CBS Los Angeles station KNX-AM that the Riverside police officer who survived being shot was being operated on and was in critical condition.
The Riverside officers shot overnight were not actively looking for Dorner, Toussaint said.
Police don’t know where Dorner is but think he left the area, he said.
“We’re asking our officers to be extraordinarily cautious just as we’re asking the public to be extraordinarily cautious with this guy. He’s already demonstrated he has a propensity for shooting innocent people. We can’t provide a lot of information now because we’re trying to capture him,” said Cmdr. Andrew Smith. “We don’t know where he is. We’re looking for the public’s help to locate this guy. Anybody who sees him or believes they see him or his vehicle should call 911.”
Dorner is wanted in the killings of Monica Quan and her fiance, Keith Lawrence, who were found shot to death in their car at a parking structure Sunday night, Irvine police Chief David L. Maggard said at a news conference Wednesday night.
Dorner, 33, implicated himself in the killings with a multi-page “manifesto” that he wrote that included threats against several people, including members of the LAPD, police said. They gave no further details on the document or its contents.
Autopsies showed that Quan and Lawrence were killed by multiple gunshot wounds in the parking structure at their condominium in Irvine, Orange County sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino said earlier Wednesday.
Quan, 28, was an assistant women’s basketball coach at Cal State Fullerton. Lawrence, 27, was a public safety officer at the University of Southern California.
The killings brought mourning and disbelief at three college campuses, Fullerton, USC, and Concordia University, where the two met when they were both students and basketball players.
Police said the U.S. Navy reservist may be driving a blue 2005 Nissan Titan pickup truck. His last known address was in La Palma in northern Orange County near Fullerton.
Dorner was with the department from 2005 until 2008, when he was fired for making false statements.
Quan’s father, a former LAPD captain who became a lawyer in retirement, represented Dorner in front of the Board of Rights, a tribunal that ruled against Dorner at the time of his dismissal, LAPD Capt. William Hayes told The Associated Press Wednesday night.
Randal Quan retired in 2002. He later served as chief of police at Cal Poly Pomona before he started practicing law.
According to documents from a court of appeals hearing in October 2011, Dorner was fired from the LAPD after he made a complaint against his field training officer, Sgt. Teresa Evans. Dorner said that in the course of an arrest, Evans kicked suspect Christopher Gettler, a schizophrenic with severe dementia.
Following an investigation, Dorner was fired for making false statements.
Richard Gettler, the schizophrenic man’s father, gave testimony that supported Dorner’s claim. After his son was returned on July 28, 2007, Richard Gettler asked “if he had been in a fight because his face was puffy” and his son responded that he was kicked twice in the chest by a police officer.
PT – This idiot doesn’t care who he kills. Hopefully he gets caught soon.

It’s too bad Dorner didn’t take out more cops. The mistake he made was writing about it and giving these cops a person to look for. For all you people out there that are looking to take revenge on that jerk cop that ruined your life or caused you financial hardship, or maybe you just can’t stand them, well don’t write about it, don’t take your cell phone and my god don’t talk about it. If you want to know what not to do then watch a few episodes of the First 48 Hours. If you went deer hunting, how would you do it ? You would stalk right, you would be quiet right, you would blend in. If striking is to risky then do what Dorner did and go after their hearts. Dorner did everything right, except he told them he was coming. DO NOT DO THAT ! ARE THEY MARRIED ?
My Chris Doner is a Hero to many, including myself. Let this be a strong message, and reminder to what can happen to a corrupt police force.
I know it’s wrong to say, but I’m GLAD he took out a few cops. The death of the daughter of the Officer, and her fiance is regrettable, but I consider that to be “Collateral Damage”. My only regret is that he didn’t take out a few more cops. The LAPD is known to be corrupt. Many police orginazations/officers are corrupt. I hope this message Chris Dorner sent was crystal clear.
My family were followed by a bunch of cops because of the same car due to a different case. My aunt and uncle and 2 teens and 1 kid. They were stopped by the freeway, with guns on their faces. It scarred my little cousin for life. I’m hoping the best for the good cops, but as for the bad cops. I hope they all rot with the corruption of the government.
I keep reading comments obviously posted by police officers defending the behavior of cops and referring to anyone outside of their scope of beliefs as criminals. I will always be labeled as a criminal in their (LE) eyes. You (LE) are scared of anyone that defies your arrogant mentality. What also scares you (LE) is that there are individuals that will in fact stand up for what is right without fear of you, your badge or your guns.
I did time as a result of hunting down one of your own that murdered my friend. An eye for an eye. I understand Dorner’s frustration with a system engulfed in double standards.
Fact is, I live by a higher set of values than they (LE) will ever understand.
If LE wants to live by their own set of rules that justifies their every action, be prepared for more individuals like Dorner to surface. If they (LE) are scared, maybe they should be.
Please, give us all a break. Wah, wah, wah.
Hey officer “Anonymous February 12, 2013 at 12:33 am”…. **** YOU.
Thank you for proving my point. When intellectually challenged in anyway, the only defense that you can make is vulgarity. Congratulations, you are just ignorant.
Officer, you are so predictable. You see, I could be standing next to you at the store and you would have no clue of my past. I don’t fit into your stereotype “ex-con” look. I have no identifying marks (tattoos), I am educated, and, I blend into the crowd. You on the other hand, judging by your post, would stick out in any crowd. If you choose to be one of those cops that feels the laws don’t apply to you, you only will fuel the ever growing sentiment of the “us and them” crowd. Be safe out there and remember the oath you took to uphold the constitution.
I’m sorry, but if that is some attempt at intimidation, you have failed miserably. There is not a day in my life that I will fear somebody who tells me how bad they are. Your under estimation of the dedication of my sacrifice for my beliefs could definitely be a problem for you in that situation. I am prepared to be judged, but are you?
“attempt at intimidation” — “somebody who tells me how bad they are” …. where did you read any implication of that? I was just pointing out a fact. Sounds to me like you are the one trying to come across as the bad butt.
Lets face it, some cops are jerks that deserve what they get. They treat everyone even old ladies as criminals when they are the ones. Manufacture charges, racial profile, tugs in good guy clothing, “protect and serve” is bull crap to these thugs. No doubt this officer had told the truth but as any police department does nothing to the bad guys and the good guys punished. He has or had more balls than the lot and did something about it. We need more cops like him not less.
cops are nothing more than a ocupying military force among us i want my rights back to have a gun and protect my own family get rid of cops they are a waste of tax money and abuse there powers all the while leaveing us targets of crime
Sorry Bergy, I don’t think felons should have guns.
Most cops are felons they just haven’t been caught yet.
The only people who should be afraid of Dorner are LEO’s and the families of corrupt LAPD officers. Maybe this will serve as a wake-up call to all cops who think that they are above the law.
Criminals always think cops are corrupt. It’s been that way since the beginning of time. Sorry, they are just better than you.
to Anonymous “February 10, 2013 at 9:44 pm” –
I have to laugh at your mentality. Here you are on a site showing “Criminal” behavior carried out by Law Enforcement officers and you say because they are cops they are better than civilians. WOW…. I can tell what kind of a cop you are.
I’m certainly not defending the criminals posing as cops posted on this page. I troll this site once in a while (along with many others) to see what what foolishness may be occurring around the world. I do live my life in a manner that I sleep comfortably everyday and with an open heart. I am confident that on my judgment day that I will be seen for a lot of good that I contribute to society on a daily basis. Certainly there are a lot of good people in this world from all kinds of backgrounds that contribute to the better of society, as well as bad. My need to comment from time to time is based merely on your ridiculous opinions that all cops are corrupt based on the criminal acts of a few. Therefore, I do have a lot of respect for most citizens of this world, but I have none for the few who are closed minded morons who find it necessary to express their idiotic beliefs to this public forum. My comments posted on this page are merely a solicitation for additional stupid comments from an element of society that is delusional and detached from reality, solely for entertainment purposes. In conclusion, please feel free to comment back, because I could use a good laugh.
Quoting Riverside Mayor Rusty Baker…
“While God is quick to forgive, he does demand justice and there will be a day of reckoning,”
What the mayor forgot to mention, that includes everyone…. including cops.
Spit, you loser, you aren’t crap.
And Now we have a BLACK HONDA mistaken for a BLUE NISSAN. luckily the driver wasn’t hurt this time
Quite an experience to live in fear, isn,t it.Now you know what it is to be a slave….
Quite an experience to live in fear, isn,t it.Now you know what it is to be a slave….Roy Batty
I hope more people start doing what Mr. “My Hero” Dorner is doing now. These ****ing cops around the country are abusing people, and this HERO was trying to do the right thing and they ALL turned on him. THEY RUINED HIS LIFE ! I support him, and would lend aid to him if I had a chance. He’s becoming somewhat of a folk hero now, and when that happens then guess what,……THERES A PROBLEM AND THE PEOPLE ARE ****ED !
Be safe Mr. Dorner and I hope you get all on your list. I want these cops scared, and I want and hope things get bloody.
I agree. He stepped on the thin blue line and now he is being vilified by his peers for rating on another cop. Once you step over , they will ruin your life.
Stay safe.
Jim, your are delusional. This guys is an obvious mental that was weeded out through due process. If he was attacking the employees of taco bell, all of you idiots would have a different point of view, making an issue that he was an ex-cop. You obviously lack any common sense what-so-ever, so don’t bother responding to me. I simply do not care to read anymore of your stupidity and your opinion has no value.
This guy is an idiot. Just disregard him like everyone else that knows him.
Sounds like Sgt. Teresa Evans, Capt. Phil Tingirides, Capt. Justin Eisenberg, City Attorney Martella, Officers Hermilio Buridios IV and Marlon Magana, John Carey, Gary Parker, Jacob Waks, Abraham Schefres need to watch their 6. Somebody skilled is coming for their sorry asses.
Lesson for all… someday somebody may say it’s time to account for the bullcrap and the badge and gun will mean nothing to the one coming after them. What’s the expression… paybacks are a person
Disturbing. Those of you on the West Coast be careful out there. This guy is not going down without a fight and he recklessness is going to get a civilian killed. Pray for quick resolution
Too late. 2 women were shot by overzelous cops today. They say the vehicles were similar. Never mind Doner has a Nissan and the ladies were driving a toyota. They were both blue.
I’m shocked but not suprised. LAPD will have a lot of explaining on how they shot at a vehicle. I realize that things are diffrent evrywhere and tensions are high, but I would have a hard time explaining that one. I read the two ladies thankfully survived. I also read another vehicle got shot up, I think in River Side. A white guy was driving a Honda and I don’t think he got hit. I just hope this is quickly resolved without anymore citizens getting caught in the middle or just ou right shot. You all be careful out there
I live in one of the areas he has been in today. My fear is not of this guy. He has his targets in sight. My fear is of the paranoid cops that are trigger happy and running scared. Must suck for the cops knowing that the table has turned and they are for once the targets.
I know, right? You seem to handle the stress at your job pretty well. I mean, choosing the flavor of the coffee creamer you are going to use that day while you sort out those parking tickets you issued, as well as deciding on tacos or burgers for lunch is a lot for anyone for anyone to handle. I’m glad that you are Super Cop and have never accidentally forgot to mark the color of the car on one of those parking tickets.
They were not both blue. He was driving a charcoal grey Nissan.
And he went from being a young black guy to two old white ladies, cops are stupid and trigger happy. It’s just fun to kick, stun, beat, scream, and kill those tax payers that pay them to be they’re enemy. I can’t stand cops, excuse me if there are any good cops, you’ll have to show me your one if you want my respect.
a civilian killed by a trigger happy cop.ask any of the people who have survived any of the numerous cases of oops that already happened.
